A Way Of Accomplishing Something?

Hope is a waking dream, Aristotle.

Maybe because of The Audacity of Hope, 2007, by Barack Obama and his presidential campaign,“Yes We Can!”, hopehas been a frequent topic in recent years.  And hope has often been debated as a method or strategy. Is hope wishful thinking or is it a strategic technique? Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen, Dictionary. The opposite of hope is despair, pessimism, fear. A synonym is optimism. I think such positive or negative feelings, expectations, or beliefs have an effect on outcomes. That is the topic of this blog.

If we could think of hope as optimism, it might be helpful. Optimism: hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something,Dictionary. Optimism could be considered a point of view, a way of seeing things. So much has been written about the virtues of optimism, especially by Martin Seligman.Optimism is the feeling of thinking things will be well and be hopeful.

A method is a process to obtain a goal. For me, hope, optimism, positive thinking are processes that likely lead to decision making behaviors seeking positive outcomes. Fear and pessimism inhibit positive, creative decision making behaviors. Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power, William James.Positive thinking enhances creative, versatile, effective decision making strategies.

In order for hope to become a method, it needs to include some action. I believe a person with hope, rather than a person with dread, is more likely to act. And act positively rather than negatively. Hope brings positive thinking, dread brings negative thinking. I have been promoting positive thinking as a advantageous way of seeing things.

Hope, optimism, positive thinking may or may not be a method, a systematic way of achieving something.  But I have always proposed that the way we see things determines the way we do things. The way we do things is a method. The way we see things can determine what we decide to do or not to do.  Seeing things with hope, optimism, positively, determines if and how we act. Pessimistic labels lead to passivity, whereas optimistic ones lead to attempts to change,Martin Seligman.

I think we can say, hope, optimism, positive thinking, by themselves may not be methods. But they lead to methods.

If you think you can you might; if you think you can’t you’re right. Unknown.

1 Response to IS HOPE A METHOD?

Your blog gives a good reason to be hopeful and optimistic. However, at this time in our country’s critical time, I find it to be almost impossible to be hopeful. Yet, I agree that one does get out and work for public action if it seems possible one can make a difference.
